Exactly!

I'm reading LOST reviews on AV Club and this comment summarizes my feelings about the show 100%! It's not particularly spoilerish, but related to the latest episode "Across the Sea"
The character in this show are not that well developed (unless you consider a well developed personality trait "acts in whatever manner is convenient for the writers that week"). The characters actions have to be consistent in a way that tells an overall narrative. I have no investment in these characters because they do not know wtf is going on, and neither does the audience. I assumed at some point they were going to expound on why the character actions made sense relative to the overarching narrative and the information that they knew and the audience didn't, but the writers have basically just thrown up their hands and given up. How does Jacob know what he does and why does he manipulate the Oceanic crew onto the Island?

The only answer they seem willing to provide is "It's a magic island." /waves hands

I'm sorry but that is not enough, especially when they stated at the beginning of the series that the answer would have a scientific/pseudoscentific explanation. As a loyal viewer I feel entirely misled that I invested so much time into this series, relying on the writers assurance that the narrative would ultimately make sense and now it is turning into a giant cop-out.

How sad is that? I seriously don't care about anyone, I just want to see the end.

And to be honest I want to see how LOST writers will crash and burn in the end because their "it's magic!" explanation will not satisfy the fans.

Then Cara will come up and say "There's no such thing." I don't care if she lives in a magical world of confessors and wizards. She is right in every circumstance.

Oh, I completely disagree. I think the characters are what make Lost. I honestly could not care less about the mythology (hence why I didn't like last week's episode). I feel like I know them. I've been watching them for 6 years and I DO know what they are going to do. I don't think they're inconsistent at all. Yes, season 1 Jack is different from season 6 Jack but that's because the events of the show have caused him to change and those changes make sense.

The Jacob example is a bad one. Jacob isn't a fully formed character. He's more of a plot device and that's fine. He represents this sort of nebulous good. He's a better character when he's unspecific and vague. Trying to explain him and his relationship with the Man in Black was a mistake.

The characters on this show: Jack, Sawyer, Kate, Locke (even fake!Locke), Jin, Sun, Hurley, Ben, etc. are all so well developed. I feel like I know them personally. I know their flaws and struggles. I know their beliefs. I know their strengths and I know what they'll do in a given situation.

I used to love them back in s1 and s2, but then there were just too many questions and magical mystery so I stopped caring about characters and focused on the answers, but this is naturally my own way of thinking.

I still root for Jack, for example. I'm hoping he will rise up as a hero in the end. But other than that, S6 finally put an end to my interest for characters. Completely subjective.

I'm reading my flist all out of order, but YES. THIS. That's my biggest complaint about this season.

But I don't think Lost will crash and burn. The writers have a plan and HAVE had a plan and I might not like their explanation, but I think I'm going to appreciate that. I liked this interview with Damon and Carlton:
http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/whats-alan-watching/posts/exclusive-interview-lost-producers-damon-lindelof-and-carlton-cuse-talk-across-the-sea

They're telling the story they way THEY want to and that's awesome. Do I think I'll be satisfied with their explanation? No, probably not, but I don't think it'll piss me off, either.

I just wish one of them knew exactly what's going on put some signs out there, but no, they're all clueless. We're clueless. EVEN JACOB IS CLUELESS. I don't know what's going to come out of this.

The writers have a plan and HAVE had a plan

Ugh. I'm really not so sure about that, but we'll see. I hope they'll give it the ending it deserves. I'll read the interview now.

The Jacob being clueless REALLY bugs me.

Oh, I completely believe they have a plan. I don't think that's in doubt. Doesn't mean we'll love it or it'll be perfect, but they've known what they were going to do since the third season or so. I mean, even the Jacob being clueless thing I totally believe was planned all along. It's just not where I assumed they'd go and I'm not really satisfied. But that's different from them not having a plan.

Well, I went back and watched the "House of the Rising Sun" scene, and Jack says that the clothing looks like it's 50 years old. Is he just not very good at calculating the rate of decay on fabric?

CC: Jack is not really an expert in carbon dating.

DL: He's not really a forensic anthropologist. We need to bring in Bones.

=)) LOVE THIS. Someone should write a crossover fic with this! I would so read it!

[identity profile] katayla.livejournal.com 2010-05-14 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
AHHHH! I already forgot about that part, but YES! Bring Booth, too, because you KNOW Brennan would be driven crazy by all the mysteries and weird stuff on the island! But Booth would love them.

[identity profile] thelake.livejournal.com 2010-05-14 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Haha totally! I wonder how Brennan would explain the smoke monster. She's an antropologist after all, she knows stuff about ancient beings and such.

DAMMIT. NOW I REALLY WANT THAT FIC.

[identity profile] katayla.livejournal.com 2010-05-14 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha, she'd probably say the primitive nature of the island is making them imagine mythological creatures or something like that! Mass hysteria, you know. ;)
